IN THE DARK
A shadow lingers
as the dampness sets in
Like a mountain that’s concave
there’s an absence, but it's not yours.
Because it’s been there since the lightning struck
and the flame started burning
but now the wax is all melted and the wick is drowning
beneath it and my legs are getting restless so I kick off
the sheets but the air is still muggy so I open
the window and the birds fly in
and they sit there.
On a perch,
in their white wired cage.
Waiting,
until it's dark again.
